Alena Warm

Keen and eager to step into her last year of study at the beginning of 2021, Alena Warm found herself absolutely devastated when Perth's North Metropolitan TAFE announced the cancellation of her Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design course due to insufficient numbers of students. The only way she could add another year of TAFE under her belt was the to step in with the Visual Arts students.

This meant many hours of art history, drawing, sculpture, industrial and jewellery design, and skill workshops. In other words, many 'new' things and not the ability to hone her craft in the jewellery studio that she had hoped for.

Alena come close to quitting after the first term. This last year became the most potent one for the discovery of how to bring all her loves of jewellery, crafts(wo)manship and art together. She revealed that the concept development over a longer period of time, required in the Visual Arts course and to not be bound to the outcome, proved to be a very liberating experience.

Alena had chosen the topic of ‘Burned Landscape’ for her Advanced Diploma and stuck with this theme for the Visual Arts course.

She said, “Looking back I believe I was allowed to create a much richer and more deeply connected body of work than if I had spent this last year purely in the jewellery studio.” She also acknowledged the guidance of a diverse pool of incredible teachers who guided her through the year. In fact, Alena did so well she was presented with 3 awards at the end of year awards night, including the AJS ‘Tools & Technology Award’.

“I feel deeply humbled by the process and I am very proud of the work I have produced,” Alena said.

Alena is now at a crossroads, wondering in which direction she will head next. Continuing to learn and develop her abundant skills is definitely a part of the equation, as is the prospect of working on solo and group exhibitions, creating elaborate contemporary jewellery pieces, making bespoke jewellery pieces and encouraging others by running workshops.

Alena admits the thought of starting her own business is both exciting and scary at the same time. I’m sure you will agree that Alena has the talent to allow the ‘exciting’ to prevail.
