Choosing the right solder for your project!
For jewellers, choosing the right solder isn't just a small detail—it's fundamental to crafting jewellery that's durable and professionally finished. Today, we're diving into the essentials of jewellery soldering, a craft demanding precision, skill, and understanding of each solder's technical specifics. With expertise garnered from years in workshops across Australia, let's unravel exactly why solder choice matters—and how you can master your craft using professional-grade solders available at AJS.
Firstly, it's critical to grasp that solder comes in three main grades: hard, medium, and easy. Contrary to common misconceptions, these terms don't relate to strength—each solder grade offers equal durability. Rather, the distinction lies in the temperature at which each solder melts. Hard solder has the highest melting point, around 820°C, making it ideal for initial joins in ring-making or bezel-setting. By starting your project with hard solder, you create a solid foundation that won't budge or liquefy during subsequent soldering steps.
Next is medium solder, which melts around 760°C. This makes it suitable for attaching elements such as bezels onto backplates after your initial solder joint. The beauty of medium solder lies in its lower melting temperature—allowing you to securely solder additional components without compromising the previously set hard solder. This sequential approach safeguards the integrity of your earlier joins, keeping everything in perfect order.
Lastly, we have easy solder, melting at an even lower temperature of approximately 680°C to 690°C. Easy solder is particularly useful for delicate or final attachments, such as jump rings or decorative elements, where minimal heat application is paramount. Its lower melting point ensures previously soldered joins remain untouched and secure.
This structured approach to soldering—moving from hard, through medium, to easy solder—ensures precision, reduces the risk of errors, and maintains the integrity of your crafted piece throughout every stage. The importance of this approach can't be overstated. If, for example, you started with easy solder, you would quickly find yourself in a sticky mess, with soldered joints collapsing as heat is reapplied in subsequent steps.
For jewellers serious about quality, durability, and flawless craftsmanship, investing in the right solder is non-negotiable. Fortunately, tools and materials of this calibre, proven in professional jewellery studios, are readily available at AJS. Australia's trusted supplier, AJS equips both seasoned professionals and aspiring jewellers with everything needed to elevate their craft to the highest standards including silver and gold solder wire.
